Digital Edition of the "Libro del Saber de Astrología"

The creation of the digital edition of the “Libro del Saber de Astrología” – the collection of astronomical treatises in Castilian compiled at the court of Alfonso el Sabio (13th century) – is part of a three-year project funded by Sapienza University of Rome and coordinated by Arianna D’Ottone Rambach (“Looking at the stars through an entangled manuscript tradition: the astronomical text of Alfonso el Sabio its Arabic sources and the Romance codices” – 2019).

The digitised copy of the manuscript is available at https://patrimoniodigital.ucm.es/s/patrimonio/item/139. The use of the images is courtesy of the Biblioteca Histórica de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid

This is an interdisciplinary project that has involved scholars from various disciplines: Arabists, Romance philologists, Hebraists, historians of science, and astrophysicists. Regarding the study of the lexicon of the “Libro”, the focus has been on the analysis of astronomical terms and the various lexicalization mechanisms in the case of Arabisms, with the goal of conducting a historical survey of astronomical vocabulary.
The responsible for this study on the lexicon and the creation of the digital edition are Valentina Bella Lanza (University of Naples “L’Orientale”) and Flavia Sciolette (ILC-CNR). The encoding was carried out based on the TEI standard and includes:

  • Hierarchical structure of the work’s sections
  • Mise en page
  • Abbreviations (including expansions)
  • Mentioned individuals
  • Technical terms in the field of astronomy, distinguishing between Arabisms and Middle Latin terms

Below, you can see a sample of the encoding related to the “Libro del Astrolabio Redondo”.
